PITTSBURGH – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is alerting mariners of pool fluctuations above Allegheny River Lock and Dam 9 at Rimer, Pennsylvania, Oct. 1 – 31, due to removal of flashboards from the dam.
Marina owners and owners of private docking facilities upstream of the dam may be temporarily affected by lower than normal water levels required for execution and safe completion of this work. Navigators are cautioned to travel within the limits of the navigation channel during the drawdown and steer clear of shallow areas. Areas that are normally navigable may be temporarily un-navigable.
The pool above the lock and dam will be temporarily drawn down to allow removal of the flashboards, steel bars and timber boards across the crest of the dam, by the adjacent hydropower project. The drawdown will result in a change of approximately one foot below normal pool level, which equates to a reading of 8.5 feet on the upper pool gage. The water level of the upper pool is expected to be a half-foot below the crest of the dam for the duration of the removal.
Work is scheduled to be performed between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily until removal of flashboards is complete.
As a reminder, at no time is fishing permitted above or below the dam in the restricted areas.
