PITTSBURGH – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is alerting campers that the Mill Creek Campground at Berlin Lake will close for an indeterminate period effective July 5 at 12 p.m., due to a failure of the wastewater transmission system at the campground.
The campground will honor campers with reservations until that date; however, walk-ins will not be permitted. This closure will not affect the Mill Creek boat launch, which will remain open water levels permitting.
The district recognizes the inconvenience this closure may cause to the public who planned to visit the campground during the season. However, with the inability to utilize the majority of the campground’s restrooms and shower facilities, the public’s health and safety is our top priority.
The antiquated wastewater transmission system was constructed in the 1970s. Although regular maintenance has been performed, modernization of the facility will require a substantial investment and appropriated funding.
Maintenance staff will continue efforts to restore system operation and re-open the campground. However, at this time, we are unable to estimate when, or if, the facility will re-open. The National Recreation Reservations Service is retaining existing reservations until the Corps is able to restore service or close the campground through the end of the season.
