The Pittsburgh District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is alerting river users of the complete closures of the Allegheny River from Nov. 6 at 12:01 a.m.to Dec. 22 at 11 p.m.
The river closure is due to the schedule maintenance at Lock and Dam 4 on the Allegheny River near Natrona, Pennsylvania.
The Corps’ repair fleet will be working to replace the quoin and miter timbers on the lock gates for the 56-foot x 360-foot single-lock chamber which will result in the no lockages at river mile 24.2. This scheduled maintenance is needed to reduce the risk of unscheduled closures and increase the reliability of navigation facilities.
The Pittsburgh District has coordinated with key stakeholders to minimize the impact to river users and regional navigation.
The district’s navigation structures not only provide reliable river commerce, but also provide water supplies for drinking, industrial use, firefighting and sanitation. The sustained pools of water provided by navigation dams encourage economic development within the region.
