PITTSBURGH – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is inviting the public to celebrate National Public Lands Day and partake in volunteer activities at Berlin Lake, Michael J. Kirwan Dam, Stonewall Jackson Lake and Youghiogheny River Lake, Saturday, Sept. 25.

Participants are advised to monitor weather reports prior to attending National Public Lands Day events as well as wear appropriate clothing such as boots, hats, pants, sunscreen and work gloves. All reservoirs will follow COVID-19 procedures in accordance with federal, state and local guidelines.

Members of the media are invited to attend the clean-up events. Contact the Pittsburgh District’s Public Affairs office at (412) 395-7500 or email CELRP-PA@usace.army.mil  for media queries and other assistance.

Select reservoir locations will provide either free food or free camping to volunteers who help cleanup and assist with beautification projects. Details for each location’s clean up events are outlined below.

 

Berlin Lake

WHERE: 7400 Bedell Road, Berlin Center, Ohio 44401.

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch break from 12 to 1 p.m.

WHAT: Milkweed planting, tree care and litter pickup around the campground and reservoir. Berlin Lake will provide free camping at either the Maplewood or Hickory campsites on Friday and Saturday to volunteers who help clean up on Saturday. The free campground reservations are provided by pre-registering for the event over the phone. Visitors are responsible for their own meals throughout the weekend.

Halloween event: Berlin Lake will also host a trick-or-treat event at the Mill Creek Campground, Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Campers are invited to bring candy and Halloween decorations to celebrate the final weekend of the campsite’s 2021 season.

Michael J. Kirwan & Dam

WHERE: 5767 Wayland Road, Ravenna, Ohio 44266.

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 25 beginning at 9 a.m.

WHAT: Litter pickup. Free lunch provided to participating volunteers. Gloves, trash bags and hand sanitizer will be provided. Participants are encouraged to RSVP beforehand.

Stonewall Jackson

WHERE: 1012 Skin Creek Road, Weston, West Virginia 26452.

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 25 beginning at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WHAT: Stonewall Jackson is partnering with the Glenville State College Forestry Club and Fishing Report West Virginia to help clean and remove litter along a mile-long stretch of Hog Hollow Road and the Stonewall Jackson Lake shoreline. Participants are encouraged to RSVP beforehand.

Youghiogheny River Lake

WHERE: Somerfield North Recreation Area & Boat Launch, Addison, Route 40 and Lakeshore Drive, Pennsylvania 15411.

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WHAT: Clean up the lake’s shoreline. Work gloves and garbage bags will be provided. Food and beverages will be provided courtesy of Friends for the Youghiogheny. Participants are encouraged to RSVP beforehand.
