BERLIN LAKE, Ohio – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it will delay the May 20, 2015 opening of its Berlin Lake Mill Creek Recreation Campground near Alliance, Ohio, due to a damaged wastewater transmission system that services most of the campground.
Army Corps officials discovered severe damage to the transmission system at a critical juncture in the campground’s sewer system as ice and snow in the area receded off the lake. Army Corps engineers assessed that winter damage to the transmission system has caused a loss of sewage service to 90 percent of the campground, as well as the dump station, maintenance office and garage. Officials are now finalizing the scope of work and preparing a solicitation for a repair contract.
The Corps is working through the National Recreation Reservation System to cancel reservations and inform those who have plans to camp at Berlin Lake that the facility will be temporarily closed through June. Tentative date for opening the campground is July 2, 2015. Campers who have reservations to camp at Berlin Lake during this time should adjust their plans and seek accommodations at another facility.
The boat launch ramp will open as scheduled, on May 20.
The Corps will post updates to its website at www.lrp.usace.army.mil and to Corps Lakes Gateway website at www.CorpsLakes.us
The Corps offers many other recreational opportunities in the area at Michael J. Kirwan Dam and Reservoir, Mosquito Creek Lake, and Shenango River Lake.
