    Headwaters Highlights: Shenango River Lake team works year-round to improve federal lands

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District constructed Shenango River Lake to reduce flooding, save lives and protect property. However, in the years since, the dam, reservoir and federal lands have become a major hotspot for outdoor recreation.

    From analog machines to machines learning: the Pittsburgh District’s nascent relationship with artificial intelligence

    Artificial intelligence (AI) took the world by storm in 2023 when various rapidly-improving text-language models became publicly available. Since then, the human race has delved into the wacky, wild world of AI and faced some pressing questions: how do I trust the content I find online? Is my self-driving car plotting world domination? Will my toaster have a midlife crisis?
  • Pittsburgh District geotechnical engineers and geologists study subsurface terrain to assess bedrock for construction projects. A marine drilling crew has been working at Emsworth Locks and Dams since July to drill more than 50 boreholes. The geotechnical team will send samples to a lab to identify the bedrock hardness, strength and permeability for construction. The district plans on constructing a newer, larger lock chamber at Emsworth as part of the Upper Ohio Navigation Project.

Spearheading this collaborative endeavor for our public lands, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District was pivotal fostering connections among community members and organizations.

    Pittsburgh District researcher flexes her ‘mussels’ toward doctorate degree

    Kristi Dobra is a recipient of the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation scholarship. The Department of Defense funds the SMART program to provide education and workforce development opportunities for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering. or math. So far, the program has awarded more than 3,800 scholarships at more than 400 universities, from bachelor’s up to doctoral degrees.

    By definition, a dam is “a barrier preventing the flow of water or of loose solid materials such as soil or snow”…so why does Union City Dam sometimes look like there’s no water in it?
